The 3rd phase of the National Anti-Cancer Week - Whole Process Cancer Rehabilitation Management
Today, the morbidity, lethality and cost of cancer in China remain high. The 5-year survival rate is 53% in the United States while it is lower than 30% in China.
According to the authoritative magazine "The Lancet", in 2020, there were 3 million cancer deaths in mainland China. Among them, 90% died due to recurrence and metastasis, the 3-year recurrence and metastasis rate was 80%, and the 5-year recurrence and metastasis rate was 90%. It can be said that in China, "reducing cancer recurrence and metastasis" remains a long-term, arduous task.
On the evening of April 19th, the program "Sharing Viewpoints of Famous Doctors" invited Shuisheng Wu, a TCM oncologist and MD from the National Medical Hall of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to share "the whole process management of cancer rehabilitation" online.
1. "Treatment does not equal rehabilitation". There is still a lot of work to be done to achieve full rehabilitation.
"Many patients are discharged after surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The doctor only tells the patient to have regular check-ups. After discharge, due to the lack of doctors' systematic guidance and the patient's self-management, the patient's cancer recurred in as few as a few months or as many as 2 to 3 years. "
After discharge, patients also need to employ comprehensive rehabilitation methods to improve immunity, achieve immune balance and prevent cancer recurrence and metastasis. Compared with other diseases, cancer is more likely to recur and metastasize, which requires patients to do a good job of "whole process cancer rehabilitation management" after discharge.
What is whole process cancer rehabilitation management?
Cancer prevention and treatment includes prevention (preventive treatment of disease), early screening, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This is a systematic project, but in fact, most medical personnel, not to mention the general public, only emphasize treatment and ignore rehabilitation.
The Cancer Rehabilitation Center of Fujian Cancer Rehabilitation Association focuses on restoring the patient's immune balance and improving the soil to prevent cancer from progressing. "Today's Western medicine only remembers weeding and neglects soil improvement, which is difficult to eradicate the disease."
The Cancer Rehabilitation Center of Fujian Cancer Rehabilitation Association divides the whole process management of cancer rehabilitation into two levels:
1) Management of the whole process: all aspects including prevention, treatment and follow-up guidance should be conducted after discharge;
2) Management of people: It is necessary to adjust the patient’s body and mind, prevent the patient from living in fear and depression and guide the patient to face the disease positively.
To realize the transformation from "treatment of disease" to "treatment of people", both the patient’s body and mind must be managed.
2. There are 8 things to do in the whole process management of cancer rehabilitation.
1) Risk assessment of disease
The patient's information is comprehensively collected from the perspectives of traditional Chinese and Western medicine to obtain the corresponding disease risk assessment.
2) Expert consultation
Invite traditional Chinese medicine experts, Western medicine experts, nutrition medicine experts, sports experts and multi-field medical experts for consultation, and cooperate with multiple disciplines to formulate the best rehabilitation treatment plan.
3) Conbined treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine
Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are focused on fighting the "enemy" while traditional Chinese medicine is "strengthening the body resistance" and improving the soil. Both are indispensable. Therefore, it is necessary to use oral administration of traditional Chinese medicine, rehabilitation physiotherapy and Western medicine treatment for cancer patients.
4) Stress reduction training
"Reducing the psychological pressure, facing it calmly and living in the present are important links of cancer rehabilitation treatment for patients."
Through psychologists and anti-cancer stars to communicate with patients one-on-one, carry out psychological counseling for patients, make patients huddle together for warmth, and instill "positive energy" in patients, and establish correct anti-cancer concepts and scientific rehabilitation confidence for patients.
5) Nutritional therapy
"Disease enters by the mouth but you can eat better to keep fit." There are nine types of constitutions in traditional Chinese medicine. Dietary guidance is given according to the patient's constitution in order to improve the patient's appetite and enhance the absorption capacity of the spleen and stomach of the patient. "The future medical treatment should be a coordinated treatment of Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and nutritional medicine."
6) Sports training
Life lies in movement. For people who have recovered from cancer, how to move? How much to move? New qigong is recommended, which has the functions of strengthening the body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factors and improving immune function. At the same time, it is suggested that cancer patients can participate in anti-cancer associations, integrate into anti-cancer groups and actively learn from them.
7) Adjuvant therapy
Acupuncture, massage, external treatment of traditional Chinese medicine, hyperthermia therapy and other auxiliary treatments.
8) Daily management
Daily management includes disease follow-up after discharge, participation in rehabilitation organizations, and participation in group activities.
If the patient can implement the above 8 points, a full rehabilitation is expected.
Can patients still take traditional Chinese medicine while taking targeted drugs?
The starting point of Western medicine treatment of cancer is to kill cancer cells. However, in order to "100% kill cancer cells", it depends on the patient's own immunity. So don't forget the help of traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine can alleviate the toxic and side effects of Western medicine, allowing the body to recover from the 'aggressive and damaging' treatment injuries.
Therefore, patients should take traditional Chinese medicine in time.In order to avoid possible drug-effect interactions between traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, these two medicines should be taken two hours apart.
3. Features of cancer rehabilitation management
Tumors are local manifestations of systemic disease. Combining traditional Chinese medicine, western medicine, nutrition, exercise, emotion and multi-disciplinary collaborative operations, we can achieve relatively ideal treatment goals.
2) Whole process
The whole process of systematic management includes from prevention to screening, from diagnosis to treatment, from treatment to rehabilitation, from hospitalization to post-discharge, from ward to family, and from body to mind.
Cancer is a chronic disease. To achieve a balanced and stable immune system, cancer rehabilitation cannot be achieved overnight.
"How to reflect the effectiveness of the treatment? In traditional Chinese medicine, it is most convincing that one's essence, qi (energy) and spirit are restored, and that one feels better; in Western medicine, it is convincing that the tumor has become smaller, the tumor markers have gradually decreased, and the CT3 and CT4 have gradually increased." The evaluation of rehabilitation treatment effect includes subjective and objective evaluation indicators such as self-physical-and-mental evaluation, imaging, immune function and tumor markers.
3) Multidisciplinary therapy
Cancer rehabilitation management is a combination of traditional Chinese medicine, Western medicine, nutritional medicine, exercise and adjuvant therapy, and it is also a multidisciplinary collaboration. It pays more attention to the patient's survival status rather than just focusing on the indicators.
How long will the whole process management take?
In theory, we should not set a time limit on it. The longer the better.
If the patient's body and mind have recovered under the conditioning of traditional Chinese medicine, and the patient's body does not have soil for tumor growth, "the patient can take traditional Chinese medicine for a week and stop it for a week, and finally take the traditional Chinese medicine for 10 days every month. It is best for patients not to stop medication for a few months, half a year or one year. Patients should not think of the doctor until they feel uncomfortable.
Finally, Dr. Wu suggested us that "Cherishing health starts from ‘preventive treatment of disease’. Cancer rehabilitation requires whole process management."
GanoHerb wishes you all good health and happiness.
