"New Revised Materia Medica": “The ‘Five Mushrooms,’ as recorded in the Classic, are all said to grow on the Five Mountains, each bearing a color unique to its respective mountain. Yet, among the specimens offered from various regions, the white mushroom is not necessarily from Mount Hua, and the black mushroom is certainly not from the Sacred Mountain. Moreover, most mushrooms are yellow or white, while those that are black or blue are exceedingly rare. Still, the purple mushroom is the most common—yet it does not belong to the category of the ‘Five Mushrooms.’ However, mushrooms themselves are already hard to come by; even if one were to obtain a few, how could they possibly be consumed continuously over a long period?”
