Ganoderma, scientifically known as Ganoderma, is also referred to by various other names, including Hongzhi, Chizhi, Mulingzhi, Danzhi, Junlingzhi, Xianzhi, Xiancao, Ruicao, and Hanyangcao. The fruiting bodies are typically annual, corky, and stalked, with caps ranging in size and generally exhibiting shades of light brown, brownish, or reddish-brown. In China, there are over 100 species of fungi belonging to the Ganoderma family. The Ganoderma we commonly encounter is Ganoderma lucidum, or "Chizhi." Other species within the Ganoderma genus that possess medicinal value include Songshan Ganoderma (Mulingzhi), Bo Shuzhi (Bogai Ganoderma), Zi Zhi (Muzhi), and Shuye (Pinggai Ganoderma).
The "Shennong's Materia Medica" describes Lingzhi as a superior medicinal herb—a highly effective and non-toxic medicinal fungus. For a long time, traditional Chinese medicine has regarded Lingzhi as a precious herbal remedy that nourishes and strengthens the body, reinforces vital essence, and promotes longevity. Throughout history, it was revered by ancient emperors as an "elixir of immortality" and presented to the imperial court. Lingzhi is also considered a symbol of auspiciousness, wealth, beauty, and long life.

The structure of Lingzhi.
The most fundamental structural unit of Ganoderma lucidum, like that of other living organisms, is the cell. However, many fungal cells are interconnected to form thread-like structures known as hyphae. Both the mycelium—growing on decaying wood or artificial culture media—and the fruiting bodies—developing on decaying wood or culture media—are composed of fungal cells called hyphae. The main chemical constituents of Ganoderma lucidum’s mycelium include water, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and various inorganic salts. Its primary bioactive components comprise polysaccharides, triterpenoids, nucleosides, sterols, alkaloids, furan derivatives, amino acid peptides, and trace amounts of organic germanium and selenium.
Lingzhi's Habits and Lifestyle
Ganoderma lucidum is a saprophytic fungus that in nature typically grows on tree stumps, wooden posts, and decaying wood of trees such as Quercus acutissima, Castanopsis fissa, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Lithocarpus xylocarpus, and Acer species. However, it can also parasitize certain living trees. Its primary nutrients include carbon, nitrogen, and inorganic salts; Ganoderma mycelium can grow on substrates containing cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Ganoderma lucidum produces fruiting bodies under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. It is a thermophilic saprophytic fungus as well as a facultative parasitic fungus with a broad temperature-adaptation range. Mycelium can grow at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C, with the optimal growth temperature being 25°C ± 2°C. The temperature range for fruiting-body differentiation and development is 20°C to 30°C, with the most favorable temperature being 18°C to 20°C. Fruiting-body differentiation can occur at temperatures between 20°C and 35°C; however, if the temperature remains above 35°C or falls below 18°C, fruiting-body differentiation will not occur. During the reproductive growth phase, temperature fluctuations of 8°C to 10°C are particularly beneficial for both differentiation and growth. During the mycelial growth phase, relative air humidity should be maintained around 70%; during the fruiting-body development phase, relative humidity should be kept between 85% and 90%.
Meanwhile, Ganoderma lucidum is an aerobic fungus with high oxygen requirements. During the fruiting-body development stage, it is relatively sensitive to CO2 concentration, and the CO2 level in the air must be maintained at 0.03%. When the CO2 concentration is too high, the mushroom cap fails to differentiate, and only the stipe grows, resulting in a multi-branched structure known as "deer antler ganoderma." If the CO2 concentration fluctuates between high and low levels, it will negatively affect fruiting-body formation. In addition, light also has a certain influence on the development of Ganoderma lucidum fruiting bodies: mycelia grown in complete darkness cannot induce the differentiation of fruiting-body primordia.
