In ancient China, during the Spring Festival, in addition to pasting spring couplets or cutting paper flowers, people would also hang "Sui Chao Tu" paintings to welcome the spring and invite good fortune, praying for a year of smooth sailing and prosperity.
This New Year’s painting was completed in the first month of the second year of the Xuande reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Ming Dynasty (1427 AD). Inside the rustic bronze pot are arranged ten types of floral materials—pine, cypress, plum blossom, orchid, camellia, narcissus, bamboo, persimmon, ruyi, and reishi—symbolizing “perfect harmony in all aspects.” Among them, persimmons, "ruyi" (as in "as you wish"), lingzhi mushrooms, and vases, with their homophonic combinations, convey the auspicious meaning of "everything goes smoothly, bringing good fortune and peace."
When the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty acquired this painting, in addition to having it re-framed, he also boldly inscribed the four characters “Lü Duan Ji Qing” on the poem panel—the area directly above the main image. “Lü Duan” refers to the first day of the lunar new year, and “Qing” carries the meaning of blessings and good fortune, lending even greater nobility to this New Year painting.
It is precisely because of Lingzhi’s perfectly symmetrical and unexpected shape, combined with the delightful real-world experience of “lightening the body and prolonging life” during its use, that Lingzhi has become the most frequently depicted totem in calligraphy and painting throughout the ages, symbolizing auspiciousness, good fortune, and enduring longevity. Only Lingzhi can boast such a substantial amount of Chinese medicinal herbs!
As we bid farewell to the turbulent Year of the Dog—the Year of Wuxu—and welcome the brand-new Year of the Pig—the Year of Jihai—we can’t control the global situation, but we certainly can take care of our health. It’s been said since ancient times that lingzhi mushrooms are wonderful—but you’ll have to try them for yourself to truly know their benefits.
