What is Lingzhi spore oil?

When Ganoderma lucidum matures, it releases an oval-shaped reproductive cell from the base of its cap—known as "Ganoderma spores." It not only inherits the quintessence of traditional Chinese medicine—the virtues of Ganoderma lucidum in "strengthening the body's vital energy and consolidating its foundation" and "promoting lightness and well-being with long-term consumption"—but also embodies the wisdom of modern scientific and technological innovation.

Spore oil is a light golden-yellow, transparent liquid at room temperature. Because it is extremely difficult to purify and extract, ganoderma spore oil is also beautifully known as “liquid gold in motion.”

Main Components and Functions of Spore Oil

Ganoderma lucidum spore oil is obtained from Ganoderma lucidum spore powder via CO2 supercritical extraction. It is a lipid-soluble substance whose main components include triterpenoids, sterols, fats, and fatty acids. Ganoderma triterpenoids refer collectively to substances in Ganoderma that possess a triterpene structure. They are found in both the fruiting bodies and spore powder of Ganoderma. In 1982, Japanese scholar Kubota isolated Ganoderic Acid A and Ganoderic Acid B from the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma—this marked the first discovery of triterpenoids in Ganoderma. Since then, various individual triterpenoid compounds have been isolated from Ganoderma fruiting bodies, mycelia, and spores; to date, the total number of identified triterpenoids has exceeded 200.

These triterpenoids can further be classified according to their chemical structures into various types, such as “ganoderic acids,” “ganoderols,” “lucidic acids,” and “lucidones.” Each type is named sequentially from A to Z. Therefore, both ganoderic acid A and ganoderic acid B are members of the triterpenoid family, and because they each possess distinct chemical structures, they exhibit different physiological activities.

In many papers, ganoderic triterpenoids are referred to as "ganoderic triterpenes," "total ganoderic triterpenoids," "triterpenoids," or "total triterpenoids," among other variations. This is merely a stylistic convention, but in most cases, these terms all refer to ganoderic triterpenoid compounds.

The difference between reishi spore powder and reishi spore oil

They appear as tiny brown powdery particles, and individual spore powder granules are extremely difficult to see with the naked eye. Spore oil, on the other hand, is a pale golden, translucent liquid extracted and purified from spores that have had their cell walls broken.

Second, there is a difference in the content of active ingredients. The effective components of Ganoderma lucidum spore powder include: triterpenoid ganoderic acids, unsaturated fatty acids, ganoderan polysaccharides, trace elements, amino acids, nucleoside compounds, alkaloid compounds, and unsaturated lipids. In contrast, Ganoderma lucidum spore oil’s primary components are ganoderic acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and small amounts of ganoderan polysaccharides. The concentration of ganoderic triterpenoids in Ganoderma lucidum spore oil is several times—sometimes even dozens of times—higher than that found in Ganoderma lucidum spore powder.

The secret to identifying Ganoderma lucidum spore oil

First, examine the color: High-quality Ganoderma lucidum spore oil should have a light golden-yellow hue with a glossy sheen, whereas low-quality Ganoderma lucidum spore oil appears clear and pale yellow, or even extremely pale yellow.

Second, smell the aroma: High-quality Reishi spore oil has a sweet, pure, and rich fragrance characteristic of Reishi mushrooms and Reishi spores themselves. In contrast, low-quality Reishi spore oil lacks the distinctive scent of Reishi mushrooms and spores altogether and instead carries an earthy odor or a rancid smell reminiscent of oxidized oils.

Third, taste the flavor: High-quality spore oil—simply chew through the outer capsule shell, and you’ll immediately experience the distinctive slightly sweet-and-bitter taste unique to Reishi mushroom.
