Legend has it that atop the Ice Cave Mountain there’s a huge cavern. Every year, after May, the cave begins to freeze over, its ice glistening and sparkling brilliantly—so beautiful it seems like a fairyland. It’s said that long ago, this place was once the Dragon Palace, home to the Dragon Princess, who was extraordinarily beautiful. She often gathered angelica and fragrant orchids from the mountain to bring back to the Dragon Mother for her medical treatments.

Down at the foot of the mountain, in a rocky cave, lived a young man who made his living by gathering medicinal herbs. His only family member was an elderly father, who had fallen gravely ill and had been confined to bed for three years, leaving the family in extreme poverty.

The young herbalist carried a purple bamboo flute. On moonlit, breezy nights, he would often play his flute, its sound so moving that it seemed like spring water gushing from a cave or the chorus of a hundred birds singing in unison. His playing was so enchanting that the moon would hide its face behind clouds, and leaves would seem to weep.

The sound of the xiao moved the Dragon Princess. She often hid behind the rock cave, secretly eavesdropping. Whenever she heard a particularly moving passage, she would quietly shed tears.

One day, a young man was gathering medicinal herbs deep in the dense, ancient forest when he spotted a beautiful woman carrying a basket of herbs. She gave him a gentle smile and then lowered her head slightly. As the herb gatherer gazed at her, he was utterly astonished. How could such a woman possibly appear in these remote mountains? Moreover, she was so delicately beautiful, and her attire and manner of dress were unlike those of ordinary mortals—could she be a celestial being descended to earth? Just as he was pondering this mystery, the woman had already disappeared. Stunned and dazed, the young man stood there for a long while, staring into space.

A few days later, the herbalist encountered the same woman again in that remote, dense forest. She walked toward him and told him that she was the daughter of the Dragon King. Her mother was seriously ill and needed a special herb called Lingzhi to prepare a medicine. She had already searched through several mountains but hadn't been able to find it yet. She hoped he could help her locate it. The herbalist replied, “Of course! I’ll do my utmost to get it for you.” Then they arranged a specific time for the Dragon Princess to come here and collect the medicine.

After the breakup, Miss Dragon King returned to the Dragon Palace, and the herbalist immediately headed up the mountain to gather herbs. He finally found Lingzhi grass on a steep cliff—but was bitten by the venomous snake guarding it. He tumbled down the cliff and lost consciousness.

Miss Dragon King arrived at the agreed-upon place at the appointed time. Unable to find the herbalist, she realized something had gone wrong and followed the footprints he’d left behind until she finally found him. The young man had only one breath left, yet his hand still clutched tightly onto the reishi mushroom. Overwhelmed with emotion, Miss Dragon King burst into tears. She hoisted him onto her back and carried him down the mountain, laying him in a rocky hut to rest. Then, grabbing the reishi mushroom, she hurried back to the Dragon Palace.

The Lingzhi herb cured the Dragon Mother’s illness, and she was deeply grateful, determined to reward the herbalist handsomely. She asked her daughter, “What does he want? He can choose any treasure I have.” The Dragon Princess replied, “He doesn’t want anything at all—he just wants your daughter.” After pondering for a long while, the Dragon Mother said, “I’ll need to discuss this with your father, the Dragon King.”

How could the Dragon King possibly agree to marry his daughter to a herbalist? So he banished her to the Cold Palace and never allowed her to come out again.

Later, the herbalist, deeply missing the Dragon King’s daughter, transformed into a mountain peak.

Lingzhi has long been regarded by the people as an elixir of immortality. In reality, however, lingzhi is merely a valuable traditional Chinese medicine—and it does not possess the miraculous effects—such as curing all diseases, bringing the dead back to life, or granting eternal youth—that are often attributed to it in legend.
