Information

Cold Dew is the fifth solar term in autumn. The dew produced during this time is about to condense into frost due to the cold weather. At the time of Cold Dew, you can see white clouds, red leaves, and early frost in northern China.

The term Cold Dew, as per the meticulous observations of ancient Chinese, is split into three phases. The initial phase witnesses large flocks of wild geese, arranged in straight or V-shaped formations, migrating southwards to evade the cold and endure the winter. The second phase is marked by a noticeable absence of birds, most of which have already migrated south, and the abundant appearance of oysters along the seashores; the ancients, noting the resemblance between bird feathers and oyster shell patterns, erroneously believed that the birds transformed into oysters. The final phase is characterized by a profusion of blooming chrysanthemums, blanketing the earth with their vibrant yellow hues.

Simultaneously, Cold Dew marks the transition from cool to cold weather, with cold air often moving southward, significant day-night temperature differences, and noticeable autumn dryness. Therefore, during this period, it is advisable to strengthen exercise, pay attention to keeping warm, and arrange daily life reasonably.

With the arrival of Cold Dew, be sure not to catch a chill in these five parts of the body.

During the Cold Dew season, respiratory and digestive system diseases are often induced. It is necessary to keep warm to prevent the cold, and also pay attention to moisturizing. Especially, be sure not to let these five parts of the body catch a chill.

  1. Head

The head is the meeting point of all Yang energy. If not properly protected, Yang energy can be lost. If the head and neck area catch a chill, it can easily lead to a cold with lung symptoms if it goes down, or cause neck blood vessels to contract if it goes up, which is not conducive to blood supply to the brain. It’s best to wear a hat when going out after autumn.

  1. Shoulders

After Cold Dew, even in the autumn freeze, the shoulders should not catch a chill. If the shoulders are chilled, it can cause poor blood circulation in the upper limbs, leading to noticeable shoulder pain, stiff neck, and even dizziness.

3. Abdomen

Many important meridians pass through the abdomen, such as the stomach, liver, and kidney meridians. If they catch a chill, it can easily lead to stagnation of qi and blood. For the elderly and children, or women with stomach diseases or a cold uterus, it's advisable to wear a vest close to the body after winter. When going out, you can also wear a waistcoat to protect your waist and abdomen.

4. Joints

As an important weight-bearing joint in the human body, the knee is most afraid of the cold. Especially when people reach middle age and their ability to produce heat decreases, if the knee feels cold, you can add a knee pad for yourself, or rub your hands warm and cover them on the joint.

  1. Feet

The ancient saying, "Don't expose your body after the white dew, don't expose your feet after the cold dew," reminds us that after the cold dew, we should pay special attention to keeping our feet warm. Soaking your feet in hot water before bed on a daily basis can facilitate the smooth flow of qi and blood in your feet and prevent the invasion of cold.

During the Cold Dew season, the weather turns cool, and nature enters the transition stage of ”the decline of Yang and the growth of Yin“. The qi of the internal organs of the human body also changes with nature. The diet in autumn should follow the principle of ”convergence and nourishment”.

Moisturize the lung qi

In autumn, it's important to moisturize the lungs and prevent dryness. The lungs prefer moisture, and a dry climate can easily lead to 'lung fire'. 'If it's dry, moisturize it.' During the deep autumn season, it's recommended to eat more foods that nourish the yin, moisturize the lungs, and prevent dryness, such as lotus seeds, lilies, white fungus, and pumpkins.

Converge the lung qi

Additionally, eating some sour fruits and vegetables can help converge the lung qi. Sour fruits and vegetables such as oranges, lemons, pomegranates, tomatoes, black plums, and grapes can not only protect the lungs but also enhance liver function.

Additionally, the Shennong Ben Cao Jing records that Ganoderma brightens the eyes, supplements liver qi and benefits lung qi”.

In the golden autumn afternoon, why not brew a cup of Reishi Chrysanthemum tea? The autumn chrysanthemum is fragrant, and the Reishi is slightly bitter. The combination of the two clears the liver-fire and brightens the eyes, nourishes the heart and lungs, providing nourishment and care for the body from its very source.

Chrysanthemum Tea with Reishi slices and Goji Berries

Ingredients: 10g of organic Ganoderma lucidum, 3g of green tea, appropriate amount of Hangzhou chrysanthemum and goji berries.

Method: Put the Ganoderma lucidum slices, green tea, Hangzhou chrysanthemum, and goji berries into a cup. Add boiling water and brew for 2 minutes. After that, it’s ready to enjoy.

Medicinal Meal Explanation: This tea is slightly bitter but leaves a sweet aftertaste. It can course the liver, brighten the eyes, and relieve fatigue.

The evening wind grows cooler, the night grows longer. Perhaps on a certain morning, when your fingertips touch the dew that has condensed into frost, you realize that autumn has deepened. Leaves carpet the road, and in the bleak autumn wind, may you feel less loneliness and more passion for life.
