It’s a long-established fact that Lingzhi mushrooms enhance immunity—not a newly fabricated special function concocted temporarily to capitalize on the current pandemic prevention and control efforts. We’ve simply been focusing all along on Lingzhi’s anti-tumor properties, while overlooking its antiviral capabilities.

Immunity is the fundamental defense against viruses. As soon as a virus enters the body, the immune system is the first line of defense. But how long do you need to take Lingzhi before it starts to exert its immune-boosting effects?

Professor Lin Zhibin from the School of Basic Medical Sciences at Peking University, who has been studying Ganoderma lucidum for over half a century, often refers in his articles on “Ganoderma’s immune-enhancing effects” to a clinical report published in 1993 in the Chinese Journal of Geriatrics—“The Effect of Red Ganoderma on Cellular Immune Function in Elderly Individuals.” The data presented in this report are worth everyone’s consideration.

Take Lingzhi for 30 days, then stop for 10 days.
Changes in Human Immune Indicators

The participants in the study were 30 elderly individuals with an average age of 65, including 19 males and 11 females. All were outpatients undergoing routine health checkups. Some of them exhibited common age-related symptoms such as hyperlipidemia or arteriosclerosis. None of the participants had taken traditional Chinese medicine or Western medications that could affect immune function within the past six months.

These individuals took 4.5 grams of Reishi powder three times daily for 30 consecutive days, and blood samples were collected before, during, and after the experiment to measure key immune indicators.

As a result, both the concentrations of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), as well as the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, were significantly enhanced by taking Lingzhi.

▲ Experimental data are presented as “mean ± standard deviation.” *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01 indicate significant differences compared to the pre-experimental data; the smaller the p-value, the more significant the difference. (Source: Tao Sixiang et al. Chinese Journal of Geriatrics. 1993, 12: 298-301)

Create a line graph showing the average data for each immune indicator in the table, and compare the differences between “after one month of taking Lingzhi” and “before taking Lingzhi.” This will make it easier to understand Lingzhi’s impact on immunity.

Specific manifestations of Lingzhi's immune-boosting effects

Therefore, this clinical report provides us with several important pieces of information:

① Reishi mushroom rapidly boosts immunity.
You can boost your immune system by taking Reishi mushrooms for up to 10 consecutive days.

② Ganoderma lucidum moderately enhances immunity.
Lingzhi boosts the immune system, but it doesn't enhance it indefinitely, so there's no risk of excessive inflammation.

③ Ganoderma lucidum fundamentally improves immunity.
After taking Lingzhi for one month followed by a 10-day break, immune function still remains at a high level, demonstrating that Lingzhi addresses the root cause rather than just the symptoms, fundamentally improving the functionality of the immune system itself.

④ Reishi boosts a weakened immune system.
Immunological decline is the most common and conspicuous hallmark of aging. Therefore, when elderly individuals in the experiment took Lingzhi, their immune function improved—meaning that Lingzhi has the ability to boost a weakened immune system. It’s not unusual to simply elevate a normally functioning immune system further; what truly demonstrates skill is effectively lifting a weakened immune system back to a higher level.

Lingzhi enhances the immune system.

“Antiviral” capability

After elderly participants in the experiment consumed Lingzhi, their levels of interleukin-2, interferon-gamma, and natural killer cell activity all significantly increased. These indicators are of great importance for the immune system's antiviral defense.

① Natural killer cells
Viruses must hijack cells in order to replicate, while natural killer cells can recognize and kill virus-infected cells, thereby suppressing the viral load and preventing its spread. They also secrete interferon-gamma, an essential antiviral cytokine for the immune system.

② Interferon gamma
Interferon-gamma, secreted by natural killer cells and T cells, not only inhibits viral replication within cells but also activates first-line dendritic cells and macrophages, enhancing their ability to recognize and phagocytose viruses. This allows the immune system’s commander-in-chief—T cells—to quickly gather information about the virus and initiate the second and third waves of the immune response.

③ Interleukin-2
Interleukin-2, secreted by T cells, on the one hand can stimulate T cell proliferation in return, helping to build a robust army of T cells capable of recognizing the virus. On the other hand, it can activate first-line natural killer cells and macrophages. Additionally, it can induce B cells to produce virus-specific antibodies, providing comprehensive defense against the virus.

Faced with emerging viruses, we need an immune system that can adapt flexibly. Higher concentrations of interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma, as well as more active natural killer cells, are all key factors that enable the immune system to respond flexibly.

Lingzhi is a shortcut to boosting immunity.

This clinical report, published in 1993, is now 27 years old. In other words, the fact that Lingzhi can boost the immune system has been established for a long time—it’s not a newly fabricated special ability.

Lingzhi has been attracting attention from the modern medical community since three or four decades ago precisely because of its immune-enhancing properties. Yet all along, our focus has been on lingzhi’s anti-tumor effects—almost to the point where we’ve almost forgotten that lingzhi also possesses antiviral capabilities.

The immune responses triggered by the immune system to fight tumors and viruses are actually the same set of mechanisms. If you believe that reishi mushroom can effectively and safely combat tumors, then you should also believe that it can effectively and safely combat viruses.

Whether facing old or new viruses, our immune system remains the most effective “miracle cure.” And the easiest, quickest, and safest way to boost immunity is none other than our old friend—Lingzhi.
